Tamil Nadu NEET UG Counselling 2026 is a centralized admission process conducted by the Selection Committee under the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Tamil Nadu for MBBS and BDS courses. The counselling is completely online and based on NEET UG rank, reservation policy, and candidate preferences.

Unlike many other states, Tamil Nadu counselling is divided into two completely separate processes:

• Government Quota Counselling
• Management Quota Counselling

To participate in Tamil Nadu NEET UG counselling, candidates must satisfy specific eligibility conditions related to age, nationality, NEET qualification, and academic status. These criteria apply across both Government and Management quota counselling, with certain provisions specific to private medical colleges.

Candidates must have completed 17 years of age on or before 31st December of the admission year. This is a mandatory requirement for admission to MBBS courses across India and is strictly followed during the counselling process.

In terms of nationality, Indian citizens are eligible to apply for both Management Quota and NRI Quota seats in private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) are also eligible to participate in the counselling process; however, they will be treated under the Open Category, as they are not entitled to claim any form of reservation benefits.

Furthermore, Non-Resident Indians (NRI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) are eligible for admission under NRI quota seats in self-financing private medical colleges, subject to the applicable documentation and eligibility norms.

Candidates must also meet the minimum qualifying percentile in NEET UG for the respective academic year. General category candidates are required to secure at least the 50th percentile, while candidates belonging to OBC, SC, and ST categories must secure a minimum of 40th percentile. For candidates under the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category, the minimum qualifying percentile is 45th percentile.

• Ex-serviceman – 10 seats

• Bench Mark Disabilities  – 5% of Seats in government medical colleges are reserved. As per 2019, there are 122 MBBS seats reserved for PH candidates. – Eligible Candidates disability should be between 40-80%.

Ex-Service man and Sports Quota are applicable only for MBBS Course and not for Post graduation medical course. 5% Physically Handicapped is applicable for both UG and PG Medical courses.

Tamil Nadu Government School 7.5% Reservation Quota

From the admission year 2020 onwards, the Tamil Nadu government introduced a 7.5% horizontal reservation for students who have completed their schooling entirely in government schools within the state. Under this provision, 7.5% of seats are reserved within each category of reservation, meaning that the quota is applied horizontally across all communities such as General, OBC, SC, and ST. This reservation is applicable not only to government medical colleges but also extends to government quota seats in private self-financing medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.

To be eligible for this quota, candidates must have studied continuously from Standard VI to Standard XII in Tamil Nadu government schools. Partial schooling in private institutions will make the candidate ineligible for this benefit.

Candidates claiming this reservation must submit a valid Bonafide Certificate, which should be duly signed by:

• The Head of the Institution where the candidate last studied, and
• The Chief Educational Officer (CEO) of the respective district, covering all government schools attended by the candidate

Tamil Nadu NEET Counselling Procedure (State Quota & Management Quota)

Tamil Nadu State Medical Counselling is conducted by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) for admission to MBBS seats in both government and private medical colleges across the state.

Under this counselling process, 85% of MBBS seats in government medical colleges are reserved for Tamil Nadu domicile candidates, while private medical colleges offer seats under government quota, management quota, and NRI quota through the same counselling authority.

Importantly, management quota seats in self-financing colleges (except minority quota seats) are open to candidates from all over India, making Tamil Nadu a significant option for non-domicile students.

Tamil Nadu NEET UG Counselling Registration Process

The registration process for Tamil Nadu NEET counselling is conducted completely online. Candidates are required to fill a detailed application form with accurate personal, academic, and NEET-related information.

During registration, candidates must provide details such as:

• Name, gender, date of birth
• Permanent address and nationality
• Nativity and community details
• Aadhaar number

Merit List & Rank List

After receiving applications, the Selection Committee prepares and publishes the Tamil Nadu State Rank List based on NEET UG scores. This merit list includes:

A separate merit list is also prepared for candidates eligible under the 7.5% government school reservation.

Seat Allotment Process

After the publication of the rank list, the counselling schedule is released, and candidates proceed with choice filling and seat allotment rounds.

Second Round of Counselling

• Candidates who were not allotted a seat, are waitlisted, or wish to upgrade their seat can participate in the second round.
• Even candidates who have already secured a seat in Round 1 can choose to participate for upgradation. A free exit option is also available, allowing candidates to leave their seat and participate further.

Mop-Up Round Counselling

The mop-up round is conducted for candidates who:

• Were waitlisted in earlier rounds
• Want to upgrade their seat
• Are participating after previous rounds

During this round, any vacant NRI seats may be converted into management quota seats, increasing availability.

However, candidates must be cautious — if a candidate is allotted a seat in the mop-up round and fails to join, they may be required to pay a penalty of up to ₹10,00,000, as they are considered a discontinued candidate.

Allotment Upgradation Rule

Tamil Nadu allows seat upgradation across rounds. If a candidate initially takes admission in a government quota seat in a private medical college, they can still upgrade to a government medical college seat in later rounds if available.

This flexibility allows candidates to secure a seat early while still aiming for a better option in subsequent rounds.

Tamil Nadu MBBS Bond Policy (Service Obligation)

As part of the admission process under Tamil Nadu NEET counselling, candidates are required to sign a service bond at the time of admission. This bond is a mandatory commitment imposed by the state government for students admitted to medical courses.

According to the bond conditions, candidates must serve in rural or government healthcare institutions in Tamil Nadu for a minimum period of five years after the successful completion of their MBBS course. This policy is implemented to ensure adequate availability of medical professionals in underserved and rural areas of the state.

The details of this service obligation are clearly mentioned in the bond agreement, which the candidate must sign before finalizing admission.

If a candidate fails to fulfill the prescribed service requirement, they are liable to pay a penalty amount of ₹5,00,000 as specified by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
